So I built my first rig and the last basic thing I need to do is setup my 2nd monitor. My primary one is an old VGA Dell that I have connected to the gpu with a dvi adapter. My 2nd monitor is an hdtv that I'd like to connect with an hdmi cable.

I can run the dvi monitor by itself off of the mobo, or the gpu and everything works great. BUT I can't run the hdtv thru hdmi either alone (no signal) or with the dvi plugged in (the dvi monitor won't display any open windows, desktop just goes blank).

TV works as a TV and as a monitor, I previously had it setup as VGA to DVi on old computer (didnt have any hdmi connections) and the other straight VGA. The only thing I haven't tried is vga and dvi- but my gpu doesn't have vga so that would have to go thru the mobo and bypass the gpu card.

Here are the specs of my build-

windows 8.1 os
Intel i5-4670k cpu
z87 pro mobo
evga gtx 760 gpu

Any help is greatly appreciated.

When you connected the tv, was the pc on and connected to the monitor? and then the monitor went black, or just an empty desktop background? When you tried the HDMI alone, did you connect it with the pc already on? Did you try restarting the computer while it was connected? Easier if you say what you have tried.

1. Connected tv when pc on, empty desktop background, restarted, empty background, tv not getting signal, shuts off.
2. Connected tv by itself, powered on, no signal, restarted, no signal.
3. Connected tv by vga-dvi, and it works fine.

I only have 1 dvi-i port on card. Do they make a hdmi to dvi-d adapter?

1280 x 1024. When the TV is connected, the desktop goes empty on the vga-dvi monitor. And the TV works also when vga-dvi is used- but not with the hdmi cable (no signal detected). Im wondering if I'm missing something in the bios. I'd like to re-run the setup of the card with both connected, but I cant access the setup windows when the hdmi cable is connected. As of right now, I cant have both monitors running off of the gpu.

Could be a bad hdmi port either on gpu or on tv. To check, connect tv using hdmi with any other device like laptop, blu-ray player etc. Also, after connecting the tv to pc using hdmi, switch on the pc and reset the tv to factory defaults. Also go into tv hdmi menu and see if the pc mode feature needs to be enabled manually.

This was it! The TV was set on VGA input from previous computer- switched it to HDMI and now both are working! Thank you!!

I have no idea about windows 8.1. In my opinion it's restrictive garbage and I'll never use it. I don't know that your HDMI isn't working, it just isn't connecting to your tv for some reason. What resolution do you have your monitor set to?
