A few months ago I purchased a pre-built computer, which I had never done before, but I needed a functioning computer fast. It runs Windows 8.1, because there were none for sale with Windows 7. From my last computer, I was able to salvage a fairly large hard drive which I had formatted to run Linux, after Windows 7 stopped working. Both hard drives are SATA.

Now, I am finding that some of the games I had been playing on the old computer are not working properly on Windows 8, so I want to put the old drive into the new computer to run Windows 7. I have reformatted it to NTFS, but since I am running Windows 8 (and already have programs and whatnot stored here that I don't really want to overwrite) I cannot install Windows 7. I have tried unplugging the Windows 8 volume and just booting from the Windows installation disc, but that gets a screen that reads "Error: No such partition. Grub rescue>". When I look at the new drive in the computer management window, it is listed as Volume F, Layout simple, Type basic, File system NTFS, Status healthy (primary partition), 100% free. Is there another way I should format it, or files I should put on it? Is there another way this can be done?

Please let me know if you need more information.

It seems your system is trying to boot from your (old) hard drive, which still has the bootloader from your Linux install (formatting the drive doesn't touch the bootsector). You need to go into your system bios (usually F1 or DEL button) during system boot and swith the primary boot device to dvd/usb depending on your media type. On some systems F8 or F12 can be used to bring up the boot selection menu without touching bios settings. Installing Windows on the drive should overwrite GRUB with Windows own boot loader.

I'm not really sure what's happening.

You boot to cd, is it asking "Press any key to continue."?
- Check BIOS if your Primary Device is the CD/DVD drive

You pressed Enter, Windows Logo appear, set-up loading. Windows installation asking for Language, Country, etc. Select and click Next.
- What happened next?
