Hi All,

Built my own gaming pc and have been playing on it for 3 weeks.

Components:

CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor
Motherboard: ASRock 990FX Killer ATX AM3+ Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: Asus Radeon R9 270X 2GB DirectCU II Video Card
PSU: Cooler Master V650 semi modular
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro

Today i was installing a graphics driver from AMD (Catalyst Softwear Suite 14.4) when my pc crashed displaying a blue screen with a 'sad face' and text saying windows was gathering information about the error. I have had this screen in the past so i wasn't too worried. However when i booted the pc again, everything was normal but i could not get my mouse to work. I also found that my headset and keyboard did not function either. I tried swithching USB ports and rebooting over and over with no results. Hitting f2 during boot took me to the AsRock UEFI Setup where to my surprise, all of the components (mouse keyboard) worked fine. This lead me to two conclusions, 1 - the hardware is not damaged as motherboard recognised components in BIOS and 2 - the issue is most likey associated with windows 8.1. I tried messing with the USB setting in the UEFI setup here but they had no effect. I then did a 'refresh' of widows which did not fix the issue either. I have found many similar cases online where people say to install drivers etc but i cannot see how i could do this without any mouse or keyboard control. Any help would be hugely appreciated, i need my gaming fix!!

Thanks - Ethan

Have you tried booting in safe mode? Pressing F8 during the startup should take you to Windows menu with startup options (might be hard to time correctly if it boots really fast). If it works try uninstalling the graphics driver (AMD Catalyst Install Manager) and see if it corrects the situation (since thats when the error occurred). Another option is to startup using the Windows installation media to run repair/system restore, but you might want to try other methods before that since it will restore your system to older state.

This might be a USB problem, and if your USB devices are from AsMedia, then you'll likely need to re-install them. Can you send me a screenshot of these:
- Open Device Manager
- Click View Menu -> Show Hidden Devices
- Expand Human Interface Devices, Mice and other pointing devices, Other Devices and Universal Serial Bus controllers category
- Provide screenshot of these categories

Sounds like a great thing to try but as you suspected, the boot speed is very quick and i cant seem to get the key press in before it boots all the way :/ Cant even seem to access BIOS anymore.. any suggestions? Thanks for the help

Would be more than happy to do so but i dont have any control while in windows! Cant actually access anything and the boot speed makes it difficult to hit any of the function keys in time :(

Try removing the GPU first and use the integrated gpu. In that way, we'll know if your GPU has a problem. If things start to go easy, remove the ATI driver and then provide the screenshot that I asked for.
- Open Device Manager
- Click View Menu -> Show Hidden Devices
- Expand Human Interface Devices, Mice and other pointing devices, Other Devices and Universal Serial Bus controllers category
- Provide screenshot of these categories

You don't happen to have and old keyboard and mouse with PS/2 connector (or know someone who could loan you one), since the motherboards has the ports? Would get you around the problem of USB not working and you could atleast access windows normally.

Thanks so much! Restored to a earlier state and system is fixed, you were right. The crash during the install must have disrupted the USB drivers.
