I have a Dell Inspiron 546 AMD platform.

I want to upgrade it with a SSD and from what I have read running a SSD the bios should be set to ACHI.

Here is the problem. My BIOS only has ATA or RAID as options. I have the latest BIOS version as well.

I plan to do a clean install of Windows 7 Pro 64bit however I am totally confused on the BIOS.

Also will this effect my 1TB storage drive at all changing the BIOS?

I really want to breath new life into this to keep it a few years longer if I can.

Yes, and Please be sure that you have the SATA RAID drivers of your motherboard first prior to installing Windows since the setup wizard might ask you to load those drivers first before it will be able to detect and configure your drive for OS installation.

Set BIOS to RAID and then install windows then?

If that is all it takes it should be a breeze then.
