Can I replace a 550W PSU with a 400WB PSU?

My Cool Master ATX12v 550W PSU just blew up and I am really keen to see if it has caused any other damage to my PC. I only have access to one other PSU right now but its only 400WB. Would it be okay to chuck the 400W PSU just to test to see if there is any damage to the mother board or such?

Thank you!

Hi

I suspect the little orange switch is the one which changes the voltage from 115V to 230V
which is why it caused the PSU to fail

while the black one turns the PSU on & off

It was probably already faulty when you got it if it did not turn on using the black 0/1 switch

You may be lucky and be able to start up using an integral Graphics chip (Intel or Radeon etc) with any graphics card in PCI-E (or AGP?) slot removed.

Assuming the old 400W PSU has appropriate connectors which match the motherboard ( ATX 24 /20) pin, ATX 12V 4 pin )

check mobo and components first, for any burn marks especially on any power connector on mobo or any device or bulbing-leaked capacitors or anything suspicious.if all seem ok then make sure your 400w psu can run your gpu (if you have any) else remove it and try to post without it.

That's the hard part :/ I got the PC from a friend of my bestfriend. It was incredibly dusty when I got it (yesterday) so today I cleaned it all out, plugged it in and couldn't get any power to it. I flicked the small orange switch on the back of the PSU, plugged the power cord back in and BAM, a loud bang, blue sparks and smoke from the PSU.
All I know is the following:
PUS: Cool Master ATX12v 550W
Box: (Based on) Gigabyte
Intel Core 2 Duo

I have a picture of the inside of my computer and one of the PSU. I don't know if that is too little information to go on or not :/

the psu is history...remove it to make clearence to be able to proper ispect. also use a compressed air with caution in order to reveal any flaws that may occured and hidden by dust. i cant make out the gpu but i can see additional power connector.first to check is 24pin mobo power connector
