Hello

a friend of mine hooked his PC to his LCD through HDMI cable and no sound was going through after some googling the problem was the lack of SPDIF out cable (MB) to SPDIF in (GPU).

the motherboard does not have a SPDIF out connector as well. so my question is if for example
I will replace his Geforce 9800 with a newer card that does not need the SPDIF cable to transmit sound over HD
will it work?.
another phrasing is will any video card that supports HDMI with audio (without the SPDIF cable) will work on any old motherboard that has PCIEx 2.0?

thanks you for reading

that is exactly what I am asking would newer video cards transmit sound solely using PCI-EX 2.0 connection?
I mean would that be enough for any old motherboard just to get a newer video card and use PCI-EX 2.0?
