I've unplugged the fan on my laptop, am I damaging it?

I have a Lenovo Yoga with and i5 processor. The fan is extremely noisy and seems to turn on and off all the time.

As an experiment I opened it up and removed the plug that supplies power to the fans. It runs between 40-70 C. Sometimes it peaks above 70 C, but very rarely.

I presume if there was a thermal disaster the CPU would shut itself down, but am I slowly cooking the insides of my laptop?

What I would love to do is change the point where the fan comes on, but that seems to be impossible under linux.

Solution
If it stays under about 75℃, it should be OK. However, other components like the HDDs, VRMs, RAM, and GPU may depend on the airflow from the fan.

You can change the CPU governer to make it more conservative, which might help.
