April 2014. This is an old chestnut now, but I don't seem to be able to crack the old problem of getting a fresh install of XP onto a new single Sata WD5000AAkX hard drive. I don't have the drivers floppy, but have the full drivers cd. I have tried all kinds of configurations using nlite to slipstream XP with sata drivers. Have loaded drivers from the cd onto floppy and hit the F6 button when requested. I have spent so much time on this I am ready to upgrade to a new motherboard. I would be very grateful if anyone who has had this motherboard and associated problem could help me please. Failing solving this problem, what difficulty would I have with a fresh install of XP onto a single Sata drive (not raid array) with the Asus M5A78L-M micro ATX m.o. many thanks in anticipation of help. Paul.

Given that XP is no longer supported by Microsoft, I'm wondering why you're even bothering. But if you want to persist, change the SATA mode to IDE or legacy and you won't have to bother with the F6 drivers.

Many thanks for your reply. XP is convenient at the moment. I have two copies of XP, they are both on two identical computers with KV8-MAX3 m.o.'s they have been working fine for years for my needs. Recently a hard drive went down and a Sata drive was my first step towards a small upgrade. I'm not sure that my bios appears to have the choices you suggest i.e. sata mode to ide or legacy.
I have checked it out. choosing from the menu - Integrated peripherals
1. On chip ide device, I have disabled sata raid rom
enabled ide bus master. enabled ide 1 & 2 controllers
2. On chip pci device, I have disabled on-board raid controller

There are no other options in the bios menu.

I believe I have misconstrued your meaning. I believe you are referring to the jumper block on the actual sata hard drive. I got this from Amazon which came without any documentation. I was not aware there would be a jumper block on these drives. Having just looked, there are no markings for jumper arrangements on the drive, so I shall have to investigate on the WD site.

I'm extremely pleased to announce that after two days sweat and pulling hair out I have managed to fresh install Windows XP on my Sata drive. I used Sata cable position 6. Positions 3-6 connect to the Silicone image Sata controller. on the KV8 m.b. I used nlite software to slipstream Windows XP, choosing the appropriate Silicone image drivers off the Motherboard CD to integrate onto the new disc.
In the bios I enabled all Sata and Ide options. It was a complete joy to watch all the setup drivers load and see the integrated Silicone Image Sata drivers flash by on the set up screen.
