Was looking at this for reference;

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E3-1230V2-vs-Intel-Core-i7-3770K

I was going to buy the i7-3770k, then I saw the comparison with the xeon.

I can get the Xeon for £165, the cheapest I can find the I7 is for £220. Which is better? And if the I7 is better, is it worth the extra money? I use my PC for gaming at the highest settings in 1080p. I plan on streaming in the future, which is why my 2500 needs to go and my 2500 is bottlenecking my GPU.

I currently have an i5-2500 non K. How much performance increase will I see with the Xeon/I7.

Motherboard = Z68AP-D3

Thanks.

Solution
1. Yes you will see improvement but the difference to your current processor, if you mainly use it for gaming, will not be much.
2. If you are not planing to OC and not planning to use the iGPU, E3-1230V2 is the same as i7 3770k.
3. Most games rely more on GPU, perhaps your GPU is not strong enough anymore. Try to consider to upgrade the GPU first before upgrading the proc.

Edit:
Check the compatibility of Xeon with your mobo first. BIOS update can solve the compatibility issue if available.

The i7 and the Xeon are basically on par with each other, the only downside is the Xeon cannot overclock, and may not work on some motherboards..

Generally it's a 5-10% increase in performance with every new generation.. Just remember, an i7 isn't needed for gaming (Didn't stop me from getting it though!)

Thanks for replying. Will the overclock matter much in games? And would you say the extra price is worth the i7?

Hi, I should have put what GPU I had. I have a KFA2 760 EX OC, which I then overclocked myself further. My CPU reaches 100% usage in Elder scrolls online and my GPU barely 60% usuage

The Xeon will not disappoint you at all. Just make sure to get a motherboard that states it works with Xeon processors, to be safe.

Hmm..I have never played ESOL before, so I do not know if the game is processor intensive or not.
Some games do more processor intensive although most of them are GPU intensive. Some really heavy games require both proc and GPU to be strong.
But, if you really saw that the proc is already on 100% and the GPU only 60%, it is very possible that ESOL is processor intensive.
If that is the case, I would recommend i7 3770k better than E3-1230V2 for the possibility of OC in the future.
But, if you really do not plan to OC, getting the E3-1230V2 is preferable due to price.

Attention: I do not know how multi-threading will impact the performance of ESOL since the single-threading speed of i5 2500 and i7 3770k/E3-1230V2 is not that different.

does your fps dip and become choppy? I haven't scientifically calculated my FPS in ESO, but, I have a 3570k, one gen newer than yours and not much difference.....anyway, I have hd7950 which is on par with gtx760 roughly, and gameplay is very smooth on ultra 1080p, I'd guess constant 60fps easily.

the i7 would be better for streaming though. You could get a 2600k or 1155 xeon instead of having to change motherboards. I'd go unlocked i7 for the ability to overclock, and thus the cpu would last you even longer.

If you had an i5 2500k right now, you could just overclock. In that situation,having a locked cpu really sucks, and why I got the unlocked cpu so that wouldn't happen to me.

Yup, that is why the recommendation is also to get i7-3770k, unless the thread poster do not want to OC :)

As far as i know - Might doesnt mean every time :)

Yes you might have to update bios, but still, if only a bios update is needed and he can do it, it shouldnt be a big problem as long as the motherboard supports it
