I was just wondering what the performance difference between silver thermal compound and silicon thermal compound is.

Depends on who makes it. That said, not much, if any.

I have used Arctic Silver 5, and Dow Corning TC-5121, which are silver and silicon-based products respectively. The difference was negligible and well within the margin of error (roughly ~2C) which is nothing to sweat over.

I usually use Arctic Cooling MX-4, but have achieved the exact same results with Thermalright Chill Factor III. I'll recommend anything from Zalman, Prolimatech, and Noctua. For cheap-and-need-it-now, I'll recommend a small OEM tube of Arctic Silver Ceramique 2; they are usually $4-5 dollars and work just fine. A good investment compared to a $9-15 dollar tube of the other stuff, which you'll probably never use the whole thing of.
