I have a wired network in my house. The router is plugged into a cable modem. A switch carries the signal throughout the house and two switches further provide broader wired access in two rooms. Everything works fine except with my wife's laptop which is plugged into one of the switches. She can't access the Internet but can use the network to transfer files. Transfer are however very slow (one hour for 6 GB. The access to the network also only works if the Ethernet cable is plugged into the laptop before it is started up. Also, the wireless works fine, allowing me to access the Internet - which I can't do on the wired connection.
I have tried changing Ethernet cables (no change) and plugging directly into the router (to eliminate the potential effect of the switch but this didn't change a thing. When I plugged it directly into the modem, I was able to gain access to the Internet (which I was unable to do when plugged into the Ethernet network. Again, the only problem is with laptop. Desktops and iPads work fine. The laptop is on Windows 7 as are two of our desktops. Unless I can find a solution, I think I may need to restore her laptop to the way it was when purchased and to reinstall everything.
Thanks for any help.

Solution
Check your IP and DNS settings on the laptop

You wil need to go to your adapter settings (dont know your OS to guide you to it), then right click on your wired adapter, click properties, now select Internet Protocol Version 4, select properties and make sure automatic IP and automatic DNS is selected.
