GPU Suddenly Stopped Working

Today my PC crashed, the screen when completely grey and there were lines cutting across it. I've seen this before when I tried to overclocked my GPU (a HD 7870) and restoring the default settings solved this.

I rebooted and it was going as normal until the 'starting Windows' screen. The screen had a number of lines going across it again but I still able to see the regular screen. Then as soon as the desktop appeared the PC crashed again, before I was able to restore default settings on my GPU.

I booted in safe mode and from there I uninstalled my graphics card and drivers in device manager. I then restarted the PC and installed the card and the latest drivers. I tried to check on the GPU settings through the Catalyst Control Centre but it wouldn't let me see this until I rebooted.

I rebooted and the same thing happened again. But I was able to boot to safe mode, uninstall, then reboot as before so I think the problem is the graphics card itself.

Am I missing a step here to solve this problem or is this a sign that the graphics card is fried? Is there something else I can do to get it working?

Can you try any other graphic card in your current system. That will remove the possibility of a fried card.

Not a fried card. That's obvious. A fried card won't show you anything on the screen, will it?
Artifacts you're describing seems a memory problem to me. Could be drivers, but you reinstalled them, so that ruled them out.

But once the card was removed I was able to boot and use the computer as normal. It was only after I installed the card and drivers and rebooted the problems occurred again.

If it was a memory problem wouldn't the same have happened during the first boot after the safe mode uninstalls?

Which card do you have? Maybe it's just old and needs upgrading. Happens.

I had a HD 7870. I've bought a GTX 770 (Asus DirectCU II) and now everything is working fine.

I had the 7870 in my system for just over two years so I guess it just packed in.
