So here's the deal: I'm beginning to build my first PC and I want it to be a PURELY gaming based pc(here is a link for those whom are curious http://pcpartpicker.com/user/TheShinx317/saved/3SsA). My quesiton is should I be okay buying a GTX 770 or should I wait a month or two for the 800 series to drop? I'm sure my patients will be rewarded, but will it really be worth the wait? I'm new to the pc scene so I don't know how long it is going to take for third-party companies to release there own cooling solutions. I'm sure the reference card will be fine, but I'm sure MSI or EVGA coolers are far superior. Anyways, any help would be appreciated, thanks.

The 800 series are nowhere in sight so point to wait. Even if they do come this summer none will be on 20 nm. They will be maxwell on 28 nm which is nice but far from what is expected of the next gen.

For 4k a 770 will not do. A 780Ti barely does a reasonable job. For 1440 it will play some games but most modern ones will not run on ultra. You might get away with high/very high.

As for 2 vs 4 gb. While a 770 has been shown to use up to 2.5-3 it does not do it in a fast manner. The reason the original had 2 was because that is how much memory it was designed to use in a timely fashion. The cards with double memory are meant for SLI/Crossfire or for memory intensive work like rendering or video processing.

If you are not dead set on...

In the past, NVIDIA has shown a pattern. The GTX 770 barely out preforms the GTX 680. The GTX 670 barely out preforms the GTX 580. Why not wait for only 1-2 months to get a card that will preform slightly better than the GTX 780 (a GTX 870), for the same price as the GTX 770, give or take about $50? Sounds like a no-brainer to me! ;)

If you are not dead set on NVIDIA you could go with a 280X as it has 3 GB and the Toxic ver from Saphire is pretty much on par with a 770 but i only recommend this if you can find one at the original MSRP as i do not want to promote stores increasing the price because of mining.
