Set up D Drive for Data. Now What?

It was advised to me that I create a second partition for storing data on my new computer. I've done that and transferred the files. What I don't know is what changes I need to make so the computer will always save to the D drive instead of C. I'm sure there must be a way to do this. Can anyone tell me how?

Thanks so much for your input!
