My motherboard doesn't allow two different memory types to be installed and i learned that the hard way, but what if I had two of the same exact types of memory, but not in the same kit. Would it work?

For best compatibility make sure the frequency they operate at is the same eg 2 x 4Gb sticks running at 1333MHz. The manufactures can be different as long as they have the same spec. So to answer your question yes it will work :)
