Girlfriend just got a new computer with 8.1 to replace her XP, finally! Can I hook up both computers and connect them together with a USB and transfer files from the old to the new? This seems to me the easiest way to do it. The XP is 32 bit and the 8.1 is 64 bit.

IF AND ONLY IF (in all caps because that is really really really important) you have a USB data transfer cable; you can't just use USB A-to-A cable (you'll burn up the ports). You could also use either a USB hard drive, USB flash drive, or share the directories on the network (I assume you have wired and wireless devices) and copy the files that way.

Thanks for the info. Noob network question coming up...can I just hook up both computers to the router and create a network between the two of them?

Flash Drive Exactly. Or Ethernet cable and create a Network. But flash drive or external Hard drive would be best.

Yes. Make sure they're on the same workgroup.
