My church recently bought a HP z420 workstation and the video card has one VGA port and 2 Displayport inputs. So my primary monitor is hooked up to the VGA and I'm trying to hook up another monitor and a projector. I'm using a VGA to Displayport adapter for the other monitor and the projector cable goes from DVI to VGA to Displayport via adapters (I know to many adapters but haven't had time to rerun cables). Both the secondary monitor and the projector will work while plugged in with the primary monitor, however, when all three are plugged to their ports all three monitors go back. Rebooting the comp will bring up Windows boot up screen on primary monitor then back to black. I'm really sure what the issue is. When the monitors go black I can't even get to my monitor setup screen to make changes in function for the 3 screens. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not 100% but I know a lot of graphics cards that have 2 dvi only support vga to dvi adapters on the primary port, usually color coded or numbered to indicate such. The second port is a "virtual" port which means it has to have an actual DVI cable. What makes this difference? I have no idea. I ran into this exact problem when I my new graphics card and tried to make due with what I had at the time. You probably didn't get a specific owners manual for the graphics card in the workstation, but if you can figure out that model of the card, a manual can easily be found online. Hope this helps.

Get another, or different Graphics card that meets your requirements WITHOUT using adapters. Active adapters (VGA to Displayport) in particular cause issues with detection.

I'm a little confused on the ports because you said your computer has:
1xVGA, and
2xDisplayport.

No DVI?

You also said you have 1xVGA but your description has two different monitors using VGA (one through a VGA-> DisplayPort adapter).

..then you say you went DVI->VGA->Displayport?

So you did have a DVI... and if you had a Displayport output then why do you have two adapters?

*Please tell us EXACTLY what inputs each monitor/projector supports, and EXACTLY what outputs your computer has for video.

*I believe you meant to say your OUTPUT requirements are:
1xVGA, and
2xDisplayport

Please confirm if this is correct AND if there are alternate inputs (like HDMI, or DVI) on the monitors or projector.

If you had a monitor that supports DVI it would be easier to find an inexpensive video card that supports 1xVGA, 1xDVI, and 1xDisplayport.

(just FYI, but if a card has a DVI-I output it supports VGA through a passive adapter. That means both sets of pins are present for digital (DVI) and analog (VGA).)

**Check to see if your computer supports a second video card on the motherboard (same x16 slot as the main card is on). If so, the easiest way to go is add an inexpensive second card like HD6450 though I'd go with NVidia if the main card is NVidia or AMD if AMD.

It's hard to find 2xDisplayport on a single, inexpensive card.

My graphics card is a Nvidia K2000. Let me try this again, I have 2 LCD monitors that use VGA and a projector that is ran with DVI. My challenge is getting all 3 aspects to function together. With the other monitor functioning as an extension of the first and the projector displaying graphics thrown from a software program originating from monitor 1. I'm fairly confident that the computer would support a second graphics card. at that point I would need to examine the long term function of the computer as it will also be used for editing large videos. Keep the suggestions coming though I'm learning a lot!
