How to count the power phases?

Ok, so I would really like to know what the power phase count of my motherboard is, so I know how powerful a cpu I can put in it (if it is 3+1 then I will not go up to the tdp, however if it is 4+1 or higher I will). I have a Biostar a960D+ revision 6.X and based on the picture of my mobo, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138373 here, I'm not sure if I count the big black squares right next to the cpu socket, or the groups of smaller black squares just above the big ones. Also, what makes it 3+1 and not 4, or 4+1 and not 5? thanks :D

oh ok :p so i opened my case and on my motherboard i counted 4 big black squares, with 3 of them being identical and 1 of then had a different number/letter sequence on it, so i think that is it, 3+1. or, above those are groups of small black squares, with 3 groups of 3 and 1 separate, so either way im pretty sure my mobo is 3+1. ty :D
