Hi Tom's,

I'm in need of speakers for my new rig. I'll be using the onboard audio (Supreme FX) on my Asus Hero. Will this be good enough or should I invest in a sound card?

I don't want something huge, I just want high quality audio for my games and music. I'm willing to spend a lot, up to $350.

I don't know anything about speakers, so any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks

A DaC would be your best bet. Looking at the ones that crutchfield offers, the Audioengine D1, is rated one of the best there.

The A5+'s will be a delight to listen to, even without a DaC. The DaC will make it more versatile, if you wanted to plug in your headphones, for a quiet evening, or not to bother your neighbors.

I actually run a optical/digital out from a soundblaster soundcard to a optical/digital in on my receiver and a pair of Infinity bookshelf speakers and a sub.

I was throwing out a suggestion is all, there are other speaker setups, like the Soundsticks. There are also 2.1 to 7.1 speaker setups from different manufacturers. Logitech has a pretty good list, but tend to be cheap. M-Audio has a great pair of speakers and they include an optical in.....and I have heard they are one of the best sounding. Hope some of these help in your search.

Thanks for your suggestions, it made me look at bookshelf speakers and I may have found one I like.

It's the Audioengine A5+ bookshelf speakers ($400) which seems to be well reviewed as very good budget speakers. My once concern is I would mostly be playing my music and games at a low-medium sound level, and these things seem to be best at a high volume.

I don't really understand what "bookshelf" speakers mean, what's the difference and what's best for being played at lower volumes? Are there any other speakers that would suit me better?

Bookshelf implies that they sit on a shelf or table, where as Floor-standing speakers stand on the floor and usually are quite a bit bigger and taller. exp.

The A5+ at low volume will do fine

Ok, good to know.

I'm pretty much ready to order the A5+, but is there any speaker you'd prefer that's similar in price or you think I'm getting the best I can get for my money?

Also do I need to buy anything else along with the A5+ for the best sound quality possible? Like an external DAC or a sound card?

Thanks for the help :)

Yeah I figured I'd need a DAC, I've heard a lot of people mention the D1 so I will likely buy it.

I've never even used a pair of good speakers honestly, I've always used the crappy audio from my laptop speakers or a gaming headset, so I'm sure I will be amazed by the A5+.

Thanks a lot for your time, I was pretty lost on what to buy till you came along :)
