I currntly have a 260 watt power supply i was wondering if i could upgrade to a 500 watt power supply and not mess up my motherboard and cpu.

My motherboard is a Msi 760gm-p34fx
my cpu is a amd fx-6300 six core

There is never a risk of damage from a more powerfull PSU. The PSU will only provide the power the computer is drawing from it.

Now if you got a 1200 watt psu and your computer only needed 250 then it would be running bellow its efficiency range and waste electricity.

As dandnoten said, you want to get a quality PSU, dont go cheap on the part that can fry all of the other parts.
Go for Seasonic, XFX, corsair (not the cx series), Antec, or Rosewill Capstone and Hive series are good as well.

there is no risk at all, as long as this new PSU has the right pin connection, which it no doubt will, and is standard ATX size, your all set to upgrade.

With your specs, 500 watt is good, though If you want to overclock and upgrade with the same PSU later on, I'd suggest 600W minimum.

If you would like a PSU recommendation, just ask and we'll gladly help.
