Do I need a new power supply for my new graphics card to work 100%?

Hello I just bought a new graphics card.. A Geforce gtx 780 ti sc acx and on the box it says that it supports a power supply with a minimum of 600W and my power supply is 650W..Well I have the graphics card installed and it works great but a friend of mine said that the graphics card is only working at about 80% power because I only have a 650W power supply. Is this true??? Thanks.

  1. No thats not true(as long as its a quality PSU). The recommended power is an overstatement, my 760 "requires" 500w, but draws ~230 at load.
If it isnt getting enough power it will shutdown/wont turn on.
  2. A 780Ti needs minimum of 42A on the 12V rail and 600W total.

What psu - make and model - do you have?
  3. Is your friend a 12 year old kid who you only know because you play dodgeball with him at recess? No, thats absolutely not true.
  4. Well he isn't exactly a friend but just someone I know but besides the point, my PSU is Antec 650w EA-650 green.. Intel I7 950 3.07 ghz and 16 gb of ddr3 corsair vengeance..And I hope he's full of **** because I would hate to have to buy a new power supply... I appreciate all your helpful info btw

The 80 PLUS certified power supply provides high power efficiency of at least 82% at any load between 20% and 100%
No worry for that, u can run you pc with max power...
  6. Ok thats good news thanks
  7. Yeah that PSU will work just fine.
