Which RAID controller should I get for ESXi?

I have just found out that ESXi does not support software RAID, so I am now in need of a RAID controller. Currently all my VMs are on a single drive (I am still testing the solution), but my plan is to get two extra hard drives in RAID 1 for the most important VMs.

This is a home lab environment, so I don't need anything fancy, just something that works and with a decent quality. Any suggestions?

Not really, but I found a workaround: I run ghettoVCB and take backups of the VMs on a second hard drive. Not real RAID, I know, but if you run the script quite often you get close to the same result :) Also, in my build the only PCI slot is already occupied by an Intel NIC, so I am a bit limited in what I can put on there at the moment.

With regards to the hardware RAID controller, the Adaptecs should be compatible with ESXi.

Did you ever find a raid controller to use? I'm also in the same position of requiring an add-on pcie sata card which is compatible with ESXi 5.5 u1.
