Hey guys,

So, I'm new to this whole PC building thing. Yesterday I built 2 machines (both identical) and in one of the machines the DIMM_b1 slot is showing as abnormal in BIOS, however the DIMM Information section of BIOS recognises that there's RAM inside the DIMM_b1 socket.

Specs:
Intel i7-4930k
Corsair H90 Water cooler
EVGA GTX 780 ti
Kingston HyperX 2x 8GB DDR3 1600mhz
Asus P9x79
Samsung EVO 250gb SSD
2TB HDD
Corsair 850w RM50 Gold
CM Storm Stryker Case

So I'm kind of confused, the second machine is working perfectly fine picking up the full 16gb of RAM.

Things I've tried
Windows memory diagnostic (didn't work, said everything was running fine)
Checking inside the DIMM slots for any debris (None found)
Placed the RAM in socket DIMM_d1 individually (both worked fine individually)
Slightly loosening the watercooling.

Am I safe to try the RAM in different sockets other than the 2 specified in the manual? I am very new to building computers so I daren't really go to far into bios with overclocking the ram or anything like that. If any of you guys have any ideas what the problems could be then that'd be great.

*EDIT* Ram works in sockets DIMM_a1 and DIMM_d1 motherboard manual recommends I use sockets b1 and d1 but obviously with b1 being broken I can't. If i use the ram in sockets a1 and d1 will there be any difference? :)

Thank you.

Solution
Might try blowing out the slot with compressed air or try a different stick of DRAM, else possibly a dead socket and will want to RMA the mobo

Thanks for your response.
I tried the ram in slots DIMM_a1 and DIMM_d1 and it's picking up 16gb. These aren't the advised sockets in the motherboard manual but it's picking it up nonetheless. Will this make a huge difference?
