I have lost my desktop icons and all programs running on my emachine. I have scanned and removed virus but no docs, pictures, email can be found

You should have backed them up to another location whilst everything was working okay. You've just learned a very valuable lesson the hard way, just like I did ten years ago - - lost 3 years worth of my digital photographs.
