I have a 1tb WD external drive and it isn't working properly. I've had it for maybe 3 years and it's out of warranty. I haven't been able to use it for almost 3 months. I plug it in to my computer and the light comes on/blinks, I can also unlock it, but there is no drive letter and I cannot access the data. My attempts to format it have failed. I don;t hear any strange sounds coming from it either so I don't know what's wrong. Help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Is it a 3.5" or 2.5" drive?
Either way, it could very likely be a power issue.
If it uses a power supply, try it out with another from a different disk.
If it is powered by USB cable again try using a different cable.

Ok I tried using a different cable and it didnt work. But then I went to Computer>Manage>Disc Management and it showed up there. It says "Disk 2,Unknown, Unallocated, Not Initialized"

That doesn't sound too healthy...
If you haven't had any previous issues of this nature with this disk it's still possibly a power issue. Single cable external drives, especially wd, often have this kind of problem. An other thing you could try is to connect it to a different USB port, I would suggest one of the on board ports in the back of your PC case. If you are using a laptop try plugging it into the ac.
Otherwise if you have had a similar issue recently, it could be a damaged disk partition. That could have been caused if it was disconnected during a read or write (not "safely removed"). I. This case you should have been offered a chance to check disk for errors etc. when the drive was mounted. That is the reason that I am insisting that it is a power issue and not actually disk related.
