How to watch movies in surround sound without Dolby Digital Live

I bought a sound card - "Creative SB1040 Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI-E Sound Card" unaware and uneducated about Dolby digital live and the fact that it does not support it. when i watch a movie off of a dvd it will play in surround sound with my receiver but if i watch a digital copy of a video it will not play in surround sound (i am using an optical cable). I downloaded a codec pack for vlc player that makes some of my 5.1 surround sound movies "play surround sound" but i can tell it is not working well as the channels all just blast the same volume. is there a way to watch my movies in surround sound without buying a new sound card and still using the optical cable

AC3 filter is meant to be a software solution to the problem. I tried it, didn't work for me and I bought a new soundacrd instead. But it's meant to work if you can get it configured properly.
