Hello, I'm looking to upgrade an old computer from 2008 whose MOBO I just can't take much further. I want to change the MOBO and processor and keep the rest. Its a mid size case with a 650w PS, 8g of ddr3 ram, 250g HD (will change both of these later) and a Radeon HD 6670. I had bought a new graphics card from a friend only to learn the processor handle it so now I'm looking to resolve that. The card is a MSI HD R7850-2GD5/OC so I'm guessing ill need a board with gddr5 and a PCI-EX 16 slot. I'm right in assuming the ram will work right? I will change it later but am trying to upgrade over time. Also I read that I have to erase my hd because im changing the motherboard, is that true? So do I back up my essentials and just install windows after? If theres anything Im overlooking please let me know.

gddr5 is on the graphics card. It has nothing to do with the motherboard. Modern boards all use DDR3. There is no reason to change the RAM.

Unless you have a full windows 7 license you need to buy a new windows 7 license. Changing the motherboard on an OEM license voids the license. Either way you have to do a reinstall of the OS. And all programs.
