How would bandwidth effect a server

I am wondering if someone could explain how having low bandwidth on a server whilst playing Arma II DayZ Mod would cause the server to lag. Surely having a low bandwidth is a good thing whilst I am sat at my base AFK as the server would have to send less data freeing up resources for other players in populated areas.

Low bandwidth is the 'size' of the pipe connecting to the server. If it is small, then it can't "send" to the other players enough data for EACH player to get the same experiance and demands (redraws, locations, map changes, etc.). Unless you buy into a higher plan with higher IN speeds (normally it is OUT speed advertised, your computer going OUT to the Internet, not Internet computers coming IN to your server).

Yes, but the area which I am in on the map can also effect this right? We have just tested in an empty server in the same place as the other server and received similar results dropping bandwidth even whilst shooting at zombies etc... The connection itself is stable and unused.

HOLD it. 'dropping bandwidth...the connection itself is.. unused', do you mean dropping Frames Per Second? Bandwidth is NOT the same thing as Frames Per Second you see the movement on the screen and see it 'drop'. Bandwidth is was I described, the pipe that is for IN/OUT of a connection (Internet, LAN, etc.) of / from computers.

Now for FPS that is totally different. That is based on many thing, first off you "tested in an empty server", are you testing by sitting AT the 'server' and playing it from there? Or you have a SECOND PC connecting to the server for this test and seeing this results? If it is a second PC, how is both the Server and 2nd PC connected to the router? Are both Server AND 2nd PC in the same room or Server your house, 2nd PC at friends house?

Based on what I could find, DayZ can consume anywhere from 75kbit/s to 500kbit/sec per player. Assume the highest, so 0.5mbit/s. 10 players is 5mbit, 32 is 16mbit. Each player only needs 0.5mbit on their connection, but the server needs that same amount for each player.
