Upgrading Old Gaming Rig Advice

I have an old, albeit still "sufficient" rig. I would like to do some basic upgrades, ie. CPU, mobo, and RAM.

I spent a decent amount of money on the original build but it is getting dated. However, because it really still works fine (I use it for basic PC uses, plus games, which it runs almost always on Ultra settings with ease), I would prefer to keep the cost down this time around.

I am open to both Intel and AMD suggestions as long as the pros and cons are both explained.

My build:
CPU - Intel i7 965 Extreme ~ 3.2 Ghz
GPU - EVGA GTX 680 Classified
MOBO - ASUS RAMPAGE II EXTREME X58
PSU - PSU ENERMAX|EMD625AWT 625W RT
RAM - Kingston Xtreme or something like that - only 3G in triple channel setup
(I think my HDD is western digital, but it could be Seagate, I forget.) Any recomendations for SSDs are also appreciated)

I am looking to spend no more that $600-650, preferably in the $400 range.

Thanks so much.

if i were you, i would wait until intel's next gen chips (broadwell) are released. your system is still very capable.

in the mean time, you can push that cpu past 3.2ghz, that will deliver an increase in performance.

(just noticed you have 3gb of ram, upgrade that to 12gb, that will increase performance dramatically).

If this is a pure gaming rig I don't see any reason to change the CPU or mobo. Last year I upgraded from an i7 920 to a 3770K and it made no noticeable difference to gaming (but I also do a fair amount of video transcoding etc so it still made sense for me plus my younger son got my hand-me-down).

If you're desperate to upgrade then double your RAM and consider a GPU upgrade. I've just gone from a GTX 670 to a GTX 780 and there's a fair jump in performance. Another reusable upgrade option would be replacing the HDD with an SSD (for boot/loading/saving times).

You've not indicated what resolution you're running your games at (1920 * 1080?) nor what sort of games you play (FPS?)
