old graphics card upgrade

hi. i have an nvidia geforce 9500gt and i want to upgrade it but i don't really know which graphics card can replace mine and i am confused, also i have a gigabyte ga-m52l-s3p motherboard if someine could help i would appreciate it thnx.

There are only three fundamental things that matter:
1- does the motherboard have a PCIe x16 slot? yes.
2- what CPU do you have? (it makes no sense to buy an over-powered GPU if you have an under-powered CPU)
3- what PSU do you have? (it makes no sense to buy an over-powered GPU if your PSU cannot feed it unless you plan to change the PSU as well)

The 9500GT is pretty old so just about anything on the market today should be a significant upgrade.

my CPU is an AMD Athlon II X4 640 and ummm what is PSU stand for??

PSU = Power Supply Unit, which is the thing that takes 115/230V AC and converts it in the 3.3/5/12V computer components and their local voltage regulators need. Many PCs, particularly pre-built unit, come with craptastic PSUs that often blow up or fail to work when people add discrete GPUs in their system so a decent PSU is a fairly critical thing to have even if it does one of the most boring tasks in the whole system.
