Greetings!

We have just moved to the Dominican Republic to do full-time missions work here. I signed up for broadband high-speed internet with Orange, using their "Flybox" router (which is a Huawei B600 router). There are three of us who connect wirelessly to the router for internet access. When only one of us is online, internet is pretty fast and reliable. When two or three of us are online, everything slows to a crawl. I am using a new Toshiba Satellite C55-A5712 with Windows 8.1. Another is using an older Toshiba Satellite with Windows XP, and the third is using an HP with Windows XP.

I read on this site that the B600 does not have good wi-fi functionality, and it was recommended to use an access point with the B600 to improve wi-fi.

So, I happened to have brought with us a Netgear WNDR3400, and set out to use it as our wireless access point. I started by following directions provided on a Netgear Forum. I encountered an issue, and consulted your site. Followed the directions on the sticky in this forum about converting a router to an access point, and am having the same issue.

When connected to the main router, ipconfig shows a default gateway as 192.168.0.1. As directed, I connected a cable to the PC and a LAN port on the router to be used as the access point. I accessed the set-up utility, disabled DHCP, and set the LAN IP to 192.168.0.253 (I've used several numbers for the last 3 digits, with the same results). When I click "Apply," the router utility gives me the following message:

"Please change your computer's IP address manually if LAN IP subset will be changed."

I click 'OK' and it updates. Then it tries to open the utility at the new IP address and fails. Once it is updated, I can no longer access the set-up utility. That's where I've stopped. I'm assuming that's indicative of a problem, but I have not tried finishing the connections to see if it works.

FYI, I have reset the Netgear router to factory defaults each time I try to change the LAN IP.

Any ideas? Or does this sound like what should happen? Thanks in advance for any help!

Marty

Thank you, Someone. I am successfully using the Netgear as an AP, and it seems to be working well. I'm still not able to access the Netgear config, however. I'm trying to do so by entering the LAN IP address I set up before connecting it to the Huawei router (192.168.1.253). Is there a different means to access it?

Thanks again!
