Mysteriously and suddenly lost about 75% Internet speed...

Hello!

I have been running my system just fine for over a year now. I have Win8, Cable Internet, Netgear Router. I normally get DL speeds of around 20-25 M/sec which is great!

Suddenly a few days ago my Internet speeds dropped for no reason that I could see. I called my provider; they sent someone out today and replaced the cable modem. The new modem produced the CORRECT speeds on THEIR laptop, but when plugged into my PC the speeds mysteriously dropped to about 5 M/sec.

Thinking that it might be my Network Adapter, I plugged in my USB Wireless dongle into my PC instead of using the usual MOBO Realtek Ethernet. So, I'm not a PRO at this by any means, but that SHOULD be a COMPLETELY different connection, right?

Well, STILL, I am getting about 5 M/sec, BOTH with wired Ethernet and Wireless through my router.

The ONLY thing that I've done recently right about when this began happening, was that I updated my AMD Catalyst video drivers to the newest version. I'm quite sure that I didn't change ANYTHING else.

Can anyone think of WHY this has happened and what could have caused it?

Also, just in general, WHAT PRECISE settings would affect the DL speeds that I can simply go in and change. Also, oddly, my UPload speed is unaffected. Strange...

Any thoughts...???

Thanks so much!

Usually this caused by background update/task..

to check it in win7 u go to resource manager and network tab..
at there u will see what process that use internet connection
and how much speed/bandwidth they use..
u can close/pending the unnecessary update/task...

i not sure how to check in win8 but there should be similar function there..

edit :
if there none background process, u will need to check the port setting, the lan adapter setting, the cable itself..
if u had laptop u can use it to check the connection (speed test) to make sure it was the desktop pc only problem
or the network setting problems ..

the thing is I'm not familiar with w8 to guide u, maybe other will helps

Same process, more or less. Open Task Manager to Performance tab and there's a link to Resource Monitor at the bottom

Thanks for the suggestions; but there are no other demands on the Network or any other processes using any bandwidth (or any unauthorized processes period)

No, something in my settings must have changed and VERY SUDDENLY, one day to the next. That is what is so odd about this. It's like SOMETHING changed a setting that is curtailing my DL bandwidth in some way.

I DON'T really want to have to do a Refresh if I can help it (although I have created a custom Refresh Point, which is better than nothing I guess)

I mean, HOW MANY settings can there be to set your bandwidth or control your Network or whatever?

Very weird... Thanks though, but I truly do not think the solution is going to be THAT simple :)

WOW, you guys won't believe this, but I just ran a speed test at Time Warner's site. I got about 1 Meg/sec. Than I ran it again; I got a little bit more. I ran it again; I got about 3 Megs/sec. You can see where this is going...

So, like after 20 speed tests, gradually getting a little faster each time, I was almost up to my specified speed, around 20 Megs/sec! And, that is ALL I did!

Now, I just went back and tried it again, and it is back down to about 4 Meg/sec., so I have NO bloody idea what is going on.

So weird...!

Thanks Cool0!

I do use CC Cleaner regularly, so that is an excellent suggestion.

Well, ultimately I just had to do a Refresh on my PC; fortunately I had created a custom refresh point where it goes back to. Right after I did that, the Internet speed went back up to normal.

I was just TRYING to avoid that as a last resort; but, it apparently it was necessary.

Thanks all for the kind suggestions though! :)

Cheers!
