7870 is massively better than r7 240. Just make sure you have a power supply of 450 watts and a motherboard pcie 16x slot and you will be all set.

7870 is much better, it has GDDR5 Memory compared to the R7 240's DDR3. Also the 7870 has much more GPU cores and runs at a much faster pixel and texel rate. The 7870 runs at 153GB/s compared to the 28GB/s of the R7 240. the 7870 is a clear winner.

How can you compare 7850 to r7 240? R7 240 is equivalent to HD 7750 while HD 7870 is equivalent to R9 270X

Not really. R7 240 can't be compared to 7750 since 7750 is slightly better than r7 250. 270x is 12 percent better than 7870 meaning that the logical comparison is r7 270 non x which is only 5 percent better.
