When is going to be time to upgrade again?

>___> the GPU market is too fast for me. I bought my 7970 last year in early 2012 and already feel out of date. The hop from it being AMD's flagship to the R9 290X isn't huge per se, but in terms of gaming performance the 7970 is in between a 760 and a 770. I also find that a lot of the games that I play tend to end up on benchmarks quite often.

Examples are games like ACIV, FC3, and Metro 2033 (haven't gotten last light yet). Should I upgrade to Maxwell when its up and running or should I stay on Tahiti for a little while longer? Also, we're not talking about QHD (2560x1440/1600) or 4K. This is strictly relevant to 1080p.

Solution
your card is still fine. you just said it yourself, 760 and 770 are both nice cards, so they are far from being outdated in terms of performance. but of course, they will always release something new, that's just the way it is.
if money is not an issue then buy the latest when they come out. if not then stick with it for a while, this way you will have significant perf difference

Yours seems to be the old 7970 which was released in late 2011.
It's still a pretty good card.
Try lowering antialiasing. That should help performance.

I don't think that would be correct - the 7970 should be faster than a 770.

Metro 2033 indicates the 770 is slower than the 7970 marginally.

Wait.
My own i5 750/7950/1080 rig is doing very nicely at high/ultra in FC3/Metro 2033/Metro LL/Tomb Raider and as long as it keeps playing well, I'll stay with it.
Don't fall into the trap of upgrading for the sake of it or just to keep up with the latest tech, just when YOU see the system struggling at settings YOU want, or prefer to apply.

Perspectives are different - 'struggling' would be different for you and him.

I agree though - Don't upgrade for just the sake of it; you'll just end up wasting a lot of money. Technology evolves fast, and you'll just find yourself in the same situation with the new card.

I ran into the same issue this past year. I was running 2 4850's and it wasn't until 2012 that i started to notice a change in the performance in games. I jumped to a 7950 and was extremely surprised at the jump in performance they had. I don't see myself upgrading until 1-2 more generations come out. I was also running on an older 965 which when streaming, it couldn't handle it. Then i started to look to a new processor that could handle WoW, streaming, music and minor other programs running. Looked at either a i7 or the 8320/50. Price wise the 8320/50 was a better situation that i could purchase. this was also about 3 years on the old processor.

My thing when i do look to upgrade is this, why do i need the upgrade and what can i get that would be the best for return for the money that i spend. there is also a thought of is this truly needed right now or is this a want. It all depends on you and your 7970 should be good until the R9 300 or R9 400's come out.
