Trying to upgrade my pc

so a buddy of mine gave me this pc to start as a building block for my game pc and i need to find a good motherboard to put in it the current one it has is a intel dg965ry and im looking for a more suitable upgrade for my future gaming pc and i would like to know a good cpu for it to.

my spending limit for the motherboard is about $250. but if i need more for it just tell me
and for the cpu ill spend about $150-$200

well, I hate to tell you this, but if you're looking to buy a new motherboard and processor, that's essentially a brand new computer. the only thing you COULD use from the other system your friend gave you is the CD tray, any additional cards (video cards, PCI cards, etc), and maybe the hard drive, if you reformat it. For the total you're willing to spend, $450 max for board and processor, you could budget more towards the processor quality and less toward the board. You should also be a little more specific with your intent... if you want to just plug the old computer hard drive into a new motherboard and processor, im afraid that wont work.
