My Dell Inspiron ONE2320 senses the Freeagent Go 160GB USB disk but cannot recognize it as a usable mass storage device. I copy files on it at office but when I bring it home the Dell desktop does not allot it a drive letter and show when "Computer" is clicked. When the device is connected to the USB port first time, the message was "Installing device driver", "Your device is ready for use". When I click on the icon on the task bar to eject it, it gives the name of the usb device correctly "Eject freeagent go". Can anyone help? I could not find any answer on Dell.

Solution
run diskmgmt.msc and locate the drive in the listing, perhaps you just need to right click on the partition and assign it a drive letter (work may have assigned it a letter that is already being used in your system)

or

work uses macs or linux and the format those use cannot be read by windows natively. If thats the case then you can either change the format to one that will work with all three (fat32 or exfat) or install special software that will allow windows to read those formats.

There should not be compatibility issues regarding external hdds on any system running xp or later. External storage devices are low level and don't need specific drivers to work. When issues like the one you are describing arise they usually originate elsewhere. From my personal experience issues like this are most often caused by lack of power to the disk itself, especially on single cable enclosures.
In most cases poor quality cables or insufficiently powered USB ports ( or hubs) are to blame.
If you have a spare cable try it out, if you are using a laptop (on battery) plug it in, if you connect to a USB hub connect to PC directly and finally simply try a different USB port (preferably on the back panel).

I guess you may be right. The device is read fine on HP laptop and another assembled desktop running Windows7 at work. The particular Dell Inspiron One2320 has this problem. Perhaps I have to take this problem to Dell customer support to see if there is a work around. This particular USB device has two cables and I connect it to usb ports.
