video card bad on motherboard

The video card is bad on the motherboard of my Acer Aspire 5532. Is $290 too much for replacing motherboard or can only the card be changed. I really like the computer but have a external hard drive to save the data on the computer. I have never worked on a computer but if I save the info on the external hard drive, I would try to replace the motherboard myself or the video card. Any suggestions?

the video card is on the motherboard; therefore, you will have to replace the whole board.

have you tested the laptop with a Monitor via the VGA port?

Yes $290 is way to much. In fact you can buy the whole laptop on amazon for $120 though its so old I would say take the $300 you were about to spend and just buy a new low end laptop.
