I have purchased a media player and a toshiba external hard drive 500GB to watch films on, I decrypted some DVDs and put them on the hard drive, this worked fine when playing them through the media player, as I have gradually added more films to the hard drive the media player won't recognise the hard drive any more...I'm nowhere near the capacity of the hard drive yet. I deleted all the films off of the hard drive then just put one on it incase it was a capacity issue but it still isn't playing them. The media player recognises that there is a USB connected but won't let me select the movie icon....what can I do??

What kind if media player is it?
From my wdtv experience, when connecting a large capacity disk it takes awhile to read all the data. This only seems happens when the disk is connected via USB though.
Something you can try is to set the media player to display the files on the drive in list mode, no images and no preview. I believe that media players generally cache information about the content on the drive and at some point get low on memory. This may also cause the payer to crash or restart or simply display the "working" symbol on screen for long periods of time.
