New build for home workstation/gaming

Guys

I am building new a gig for my home pc/workstation. Anyway I will need to have at least 40 g rams due to running multiple VMware instances on Enterprise Data Management. I am currently on a I5 2500k setup but running out of rams....(constantly at 28 g used). Below is what I am hopping to setup, let me know you suggest any better. I am keeping my budget around 800 since will be using some parts from my current machine..

PSU : 650 Watt
CPU: I7-4820K LGA 2011 - from Microcenter at 269 ( fyi - I am going to OC this to 4.4 or 4.5)
Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth vs Rampage IV Extreme ? not sure here but target 350-450?
Ram: Currently have 32 GB, so will buy another 8 g for 50
Hard Drive: Will keep my current drives (Intel 120gb SSD for Win7 Boot and 3TB WD Hardrive)
Video: Current card (Radeon HD 4890 1GB )
Cooling: Current setup (corsair h100i)


As mentioned, I will be using this system mostly for work (ERP demo/data warehousing) and some gaming like Call of Duty and NBA 2k14..

Rampage or Sabertooh- both will require a BIOS update to run the Ivybridge-E chip (4820k). Make sure you do the BIOS update FIRST! The chip may run without it, but it wont use the complete feature set of Ivybridge-E (Native PCIe 3.0, native USB 3.0, etc).

Also, the Rampage and Sabertooth boards are really high end, but the Rampage board will only be useful to you if you plan on running multiple GPUs. If you are only doing the 1 graphics card, go with whichever one is cheaper, the Rampage boards are meant for 2, 3, and 4way SLI/Crossfire configurations.

As for memory, no, you cannot just buy 2x8gb. In a dual channel setup, you could, but this is Quad channel, so im afraid the bare minimum you need to propagate is 4 sticks at a...

Your build looks good, but I have a few recommendations.

Video card you chose is awful for gaming. If you can afford it, go with a better card. Depending on budget, I would recommend a nvidia GTX750 or GTX750ti which come in around $150. Those cards will play most AAA games on high with 50-60fps on a 1080p screen. If you have more to spend, a GTX 760 would be optimal to get ultra performance at 50-60fps on a single 1080p screen and cost about $250.

Memory- You should never just add a single stick of memory to a motherboard. Since your motherboard is a Quad Channel memory controller, you need to install 4 sticks at a time for it to properly use the RAM. So if you have a 32gb kit right now, presumably a 4x8gb kit, you would have to get ANOTHER 4x8gb kit to make 64gb of ram, assuming you have the slots for it on the motherboard(total of 8 memory dims). Also make sure you get the SAME ram you already have, mixing and matching timings/brands IS possible, but definitely not recommended and can cause major latency issues if you do.

If you have the budget, spend the extra $250 for the 6 core 12 thread I7 4930K processor. Especially with VMware, the more physical processor cores you have, the better off you will be.

Thats about all I can say about that... like i said build looks good but think about what I said and I hope it shoots you in the right direction. Good luck!

Ok, Thanks for your recommendations.. So on motherboard is Rampage better than Sabertooth? Also when I looked up these boards, they all said it support to Intel Gen 2. Does this matter? Is it just a bios update? For the ram - can get another 2X8 gb for now or does it have to be another 32gb?
