Can I run this video card:
PowerColor TurboDuo AXR9 280X 3GBD5-T2DHE/OC

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

with this PSU:
Antec Basiq BP500U 500W Continuous Power

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

1. The video card needs 1 x 6 pin and 1 x 8 pin, the PSU has 2 x 6 pin. Can I make it work with adapters?

2. Even if it will work, is it a terrible idea that will put my entire system at risk?

Thanks

Don't cheap out your power supply it can damage all of your components, go with Corsair CX500/CX500M or Corsair CX600/CX600M, it has 6-pin cable and 8-pin power connectors for your GPU

Or better still Antec HCG 520M

Sorry, your PSU only has 1x 6-pin PCIE Power Connector, the GPU requires 1x 6-pin and 1x 8-pin

No, your GPU requires 1x 6-pin and 1x 8-pin, as AMD GPU's are power sucker, the r9 280x requires more PCIE power connectors, I suggest that go w/ ASUS GTX 760 because its the only GTX 760 that requires only 1x 6-pin and features DirectCUII and DirectPower for more overclocking power, or if you want more powerful that can beat 280x go w/ GTX 770 I suggest ASUS too or MSI :)

Right so what I'm asking is can I use a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter to make it work? I understand it's not ideal, but it's what I have.

Yeah maybe I'm not sure I've checked powercolors website and your GPU requires 750W PSU

30 A on the 12V rail and 550W minimum for a R9 280X

What make and model psu have you got?

Hi,
The GPU would throttle, as it senses the missing 2 pins on one of the PCI Express connectors. You can work around that with a paper clip or an adaptor. The PSU should still be capable of handling the load of the card.

Oh wow, on newegg it says 500w. Ok scratch the 280x then. How about a 7950? It needs 2 6 pin connectors and a 500w PSU (per the manufacturer site).

Here's how I see it...

You have the correct amount and type of pins. According to the specs you have 1x6/8pin and 1x6pin, and thats exactly what you need for the card. Incidentally, even if yo have an old PSU with only 2x6pin, you can still use an adapter, which often comes with a GFX card.

Problem is, the GPU suggests a 500w PSU, and you have a cheap 500w psu. While this should be fine, many people like to over-do the psu a little. Running it at 60-80% they are at peak efficiency, and obviously run cooler and last longer. When a PSU dies it CAN take any number of components with it, so a few more watts can be a good investment.

I built my current system 7 years ago with a 750w psu with exactly this in mind. When i got my 280x earlier this month I was happy to find 2x6/8 pin and 2x6 pin plugs.

The short answer. Yes, it will be fine, but don't over clock anything.
