I have got a 2TB WD External Hard Drive and it has suddenly stopped reading. It is still recognised by my computer, however it will not open and comes up with an I/O device Error. I have got files on the HDD that I do not want to lose. Please Help!

Try removing the actual hard drive inside WD case and buy a third-party enclosure for it, that should work if the bridge-chip has broken inside the WD case (a common problem with external drives).

In future backup you data to at least one additional drive. It's unwise to save important files on just a single drive because it will fail sooner or later, as surely as night follows day.
