So I recently looked up how tower heat sinks work and I found out that the heat pipes are filled with a liquid, which evaporates, travels to the top, liquifies and drops back toward the cpu.

BUT most of us have it positioned sideways, right? At least I have it. CPU and heat sink is 90* turned to the left.

To improve my cooling, would it be better to turn my pc 90*, so the heat sink would be correctly above the CPU? I'm rendering and @4,2 gHz my CPU runs at 70*.

My tower heat sink is the be-quiet dark rock 2

You might see a slight improvement, but not enough to worry about. The liquid in the tubes will circulate via convection regardless of the orientation. The "upper" side becomes the top and the lower side the bottom, but the liquid still circulates and cools the cpu.

laying your PC on its side, letting air out the "new" top, would help more than the gas/liquid inside the heatsink. Don't get me wrong, your concept is sound, but your getting more from the side panel being off and the heat rising out than anything to do with the hardware.

What are the specs of the PC? 70* seems hot but I don't know what your working with. Also off subject, recently I switched to a closed loop water cooling system and I will never go back.

Which CPU do you have?
