Hi can you advise the best upgrade card for my old HP 5500UK please I am also being told I can only upgrade to 1Mb is this right or can there be a better way

regards

Paul

There aren't any PCI Express slots in that model so any graphics card you buy for it will have to be a PCI one.

"I am also being told I can only upgrade to 1Mb is this right or can there be a better way"

I've no idea what you are referring to there, what does 1Mb have to do with a graphics card?

Not sure what you are asking about. [strike]This system will work with up to 4GB of memory on the motherboard and you can use nearly any PCIe video card that will physically fit into your case and can be powered by your power supply.[/strike]

[strike]Assuming you have the base model with a Celeron processor and a 300w power supply, I would not recommend spending any money on this system. Rather, you would be better off considering a completely new system. The older DDR2 type of memory is fairly expensive these days and overall performance is going to be rather weak.[/strike]

Please clarify your original question.

[strike]Is this your system?

Yes you are right the posting was a it wishy washy ... the memory I was referring to was RAM and has nothing to do with graphic
cards , sorry . It is an oldy, but just wanted to put a card in as it appears to be running of the motherboard and the pics are a bit blocky ...I want to use it for slingbox viewing , otherwise its fine . If you can point me in the right direction for the card and type
( ebay?) it would give me an idea what to look for ..it was suggested I look at one with 256mg or higher but that to me seems O.T.T. Cards are not my strong point as you can gather ...any help appreciated
I have found that the max ram I can have is 1Meg is there NO way I can go bigger ?

The model and link is :

Thanks for the info, this will help me a lot , with regards the ram chips , are you sure I can use 2x2meg as everyone and everthing is saying a max of 2x 512mb ? again, technology has moved on and new chips may allow this , but wanted to double check you first before splashing out on new ram If I can run it, would you mind giving me another link to refer What I have read is that if its a 64 bit (which it isnt ) it would use the ram , if its a 32 bit it will only use or recognise 1mg ? is this right , I notice a smaller slot on the board which takes another memory? module , what is that for ? its about half the size of the normal memory chip ? .... and sits right angle to te memory chip nearly under the hard-drive ? thanks again for the help given Paul

Ignore my earlier post. That was assuming a newer model than what you actually have (and provided after I posted). Your system will only accommodate 1GB (even older) DDR memory modules in each of the 2 slots (total of 2GB max).

Memory

Two 184-pin DDR DIMM
Maximum memory size is up to 2GB, 1GB per slot (the PC manufacturer's recommended maximum memory may differ)
Supports PC2700/PC2100

I would not spend any money on this rig. For the amount to upgrade to an AGP video card and the old DDR memory, you could buy a complete quad-core Dell of of Craigslist (or HP, etc) in your area.

Where do you live?
