So, I've got a GTX 770 and I was wondering what CPU to get. I was going to get the i7-4770K for £250 but I've just seen the i5 4670K on offer for £150 and was thinking do I really need an i7? I'll only be using my PC for purely gaming but I'm wanting to game at the highest graphics settings (Only 1080p though) would a i7 be a waste of money for me?

They are both very good processors, if you have the budget go for the 4770k as it performs faster and I feel it's a little more future proof because of the 8 threads, currently most games use 4 threads which is what the 4670k supports but i feel in the future games may use u to 8 threads which is what the 4770k supports. If you can, go for the 4770k.

And no it is not overkill at all the 4770k and a 770 is a great mix as well as the 770 with a 4670k but for the sake of £70 I personally would go with the 4770k.

I agree with rolli59. The i5 4670K is fine, and then you can OC it to 4.0 EASY and gain back that <1% performance drop from the i7 4770K. The concept of "future proofing" isn't really reliable, because there is always new products that blow away the products from 2 quarters ago.

Agreed, I don't like using the term "future proof" but for £70, a couple days work I would go for the 4770k.

There have been talk about WD on the forum before and until we get benchmarks I would take those recommendation with a grain of salt.

I am guessing that there will be at least 2-3 years that 8 threads will make a difference in PC gaming! It is simple going to take that time to write a game engine that will take full benefit of that.

OK
MP3 +1 FPS of I5 http://www.techspot.com/review/537-max-payne-3-performance/page7.html
BF4 speaks for it self http://www.techspot.com/review/734-battlefield-4-benchmarks/page6.html
Crysis 3 FX 8 core +1 over I5 http://www.techspot.com/review/642-crysis-3-performance/page6.html
Of course the I7 are doing better but is $100 better not to me since everything is just as playable on an I5.
Looking at the FPS difference we can not say it is effectively benefiting from the extra thread handling capability.
