Can original back plate be used for ASUS 780 OC with EK-FC780 GTX DCII - Nickel (Original CSQ) water block?

I am trying to water cool my Asus 780 OC version with EK water block. Have anyone tried this before? Can you still use the original back plate? I know that EK sells a back plate for the water block, but the ASUS original Backplate is pretty beefy, I am sure it would be as good or better then the EK back plate. Maybe modding the Asus backplate by drilling more holes?
