hello i have a cooler master igreen power 600w psu and it has 2x 6 pin PCI-e connectors, i know the r9 requires a 6 pin and 8 pin so could i connect the 6 pin as normal and then use the 6 to 8 pin adapter i have for the second connection? thanks

Your link proves the PSU has 58.5a available on the +12v rail. (It is actually less, as the total combined output on the +12v rail is really 38, but 38 is still more than 33, and is enough to run a 290)

Yes, a better brand would be more ideal, but isn't an immediate necessity.

NO! :D 600W is enough for the R9 290, but a single 290x requires 33A on the +12v rail, and your PSU only has 19.5A.....(http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/reviews/cases/Cooler_Master_iGreen_600W_2.html). A better brand like Antec, XFX, Corsair or EVGA would be a safer choice.

Here's a good XFX 650W +12V@53A PSU. :) http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-p1650xxxb9
If you want to crossfire, you need a PSU of at least +12V@66.

Oh okay, thanks for the info mate. I've never seen a chart with 3 12V rails in it haha :)

Yeah, it's generally agreed that a single strong +12v rail is better for single/dual GPU setups as opposed to multiple weaker rails. When power draw exceeds what one of the +12v rails can deliver, it will just start 'borrowing' from the other(s). This isn't the ideal way, but, generally speaking, isn't that big of a problem either. It just adds more points of failure risk in the long run.

The max output for that PSU is 600w, and it is able to deliver 456w over the +12v rails. At full gaming load, you'll be pulling around 350w over the +12v rails, so your power supply would be able to handle it in theory, but like Blackbird said above, if your power supply is more than a year or two old, it'll be pushing it stress-wise. The CM iGreen isn't the highest of quality, but isn't the lowest either.

Like I said above, if you do go this route, I wouldn't recommend any overclocking of the CPU or GPU, but I believe you would be ok. I would definitely consider upgrading the power supply before doing any more future upgrades, though.

Hmm...I'm helping my friend build a gaming PC and the PSU has three 12v rails rated at 20A each so does that mean that the PSU has 60A on the 12vrail? Also, if we connect the two 6-pin connectors to the GPU, will it get a total of 40A or 60A? I don't know a lot about vrails lol. :p

Thanks, do you like my new profile picture? lol :p Also, how did you get/earn so many badges and awards? Are you "from" Tom's Hardware, mate?
