Need Advice And Help On Setting a Static IP From Device To Router.

Hello All,

What I want to do is setup a constant IP from each of my devices to my router. The reason for this is some times my wireless devices stop working properly because they try to connect to a "in use" ip address. The main culprits are my second PC which is wireless and my Wii which is wireless.

I have done this in the past with my old router But it has been years since I have done this. I know my problem is I'm not doing it correctly so I loose internet connection. I have searched the forums and have not found the answers I need for my questions.

What I have tried: I went into my router settings and in the static IP section, entered my MAC addresses and the IP's I want for each device. Example 192.168.0.2 for my wired Gaming Desktop and 192.168.0.3 for the Wii and so on for all of my normal devices that are constantly connected. After applying these settings is where my issue happens where I loose internet connection for all devices.

One of the questions I have is "Do I also need to set a static IP on the devices them selves?"
If so "How do I know what the Default Router IP is?" I imagine the Subnet Mask is the same as what the router says, Example 255.255.255.XXX.

I do have other devices that come to my network that I will not be setting IP's for as they only appear once in a while or just on weekends. (kids iPod as and example) Will this still be OK for the router to auto assign a IP to those devices?

I'm not new to PC's, But by no means knowledgeable when it comes to network setup.

Router: Ubee DDW3611 / Link http://www.ubeeinteractive.com/products/cable/ddw3611
Devices to be added with a static IP to router:
Desktops X2 running Windows 7 Home Premium X64 / 1 wired and 1 wireless
Laptop running Windows 8.1 fully updated
Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 running Android Jellybean 4.1.2
Nintendo Wii

Any help and advice is appreciated as I can't seem to find the answer here on the forums. It may be I'm not entering the proper search terms for it or It just is not there. Thanks for your Time to read this and any time you spend helping.

First lets assume you have the router working for handing out ip with the correct dns and gateway.

Pretty much all you have to do is put the static ip like you say and you are done. You do not have to do anything to the end machines and any machine not assigned a IP will work like normal getting a ip from a pool

thanks for your quick response,

When I do so all my devices can connect to the network but not the internet. This is where I am having the issue.

This router is extremely limited. I will assume if you just turn the dhcp server on by default you get ip and they work? I can't see a way to manually set the gateway or the DNS that the dhcp server gives out. I assume it is giving out its own ip address. You need to get it to work with the simple DHCP server first before you try the static ones. The static should then just work. There are not a lot of option on this thing so you would think it would just work

Yes, it is on by default and everything is fine right now. But giving a week or two when certain items, mainly my secondary PC, stay off for a extended period of time, other devices receive the local IP for that machine. So when I turn it on (it should automatically get a different IP) the wireless card will not connect to the router and I have to run windows network trouble shooter. It always says it has an invalid IP and retrieves a new one from the pool.

My solution for this problem is to give each item it's own IP so this no longer happens.

But like I mentioned when ever I try to set the IP's to a static IP through the router I loose the ability to connect to the internet. Only the internet as I can still stream music files across all devices that allow it. My network seems fine But I loose the internet connection to the devices.

quick summery: Yes right now everything works, Internet and local network. This is with DHCP server enabled by default. My problem is getting a static IP for each device so I no longer get an Invalid IP issue when devices stay off for to long.

OK after trying this that and the other thing I said to hell with it and did a factory rest on the router. This seemed to do the trick. After the reset, All I had to do was enter the mac addresses and the IP's I wanted for them and everything went fine. Even restricting the mac addresses went smooth so all I can say is there had to some thing set wrong somewhere or the router needed a douching to act correctly.

Thanks for your time and help.
