I'm wondering what the difference between an i3 4130 and i5 4430 will be for gaming. I'm also wanting to know what the difference will be for general use, considering the i5 is quad-core. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Solution
the I3 has hypertheading and although not as good at 4 real cores, it does offer good performance for the price. Most recent games utilise 4 cores, some are now using 8 cores.

The main difference is the i3 is a dual core with hyper threading and the i5 is a quad core. the i5 will perform multitasking a lot better than the i3 and it also had a larger cache size. In gaming terms the i5 will be better if the game is correctly optimized to use multicore CPUs correctly however it all depends on the graphics card you are going to use. If you are playing CPU heavy games eg starcraft the the i5 is the better choice (in general its the better choice) if you are on a budget then go with the i3 as it still performs well.

In short if you are serious about gaming and have the cash and want the extra 5-10 FPS the the i5 is the way to go (GPU dependant), If you are a casual gamer then go with the i3 and spent the extra on the graphics card.

Every day use then if you do a lot of things at the same time or a lot of video encoding the the i5 is the best choice, if however you only use you computer for lighter tasks the save and go with the i3
