I have a laptop that will not boot. I have removed the hard drive which I thought was the problem and I only briefly get the Dell bios screen for about a second and then nothing. I removed the hard drive and turned the machine back on thinking that the bios screen would give me an error or missing disc but I still have a black screen although I did get the 3 beeps meaning something had changed.

I would like to connect the laptop hard drive to my PC to see if the data is recoverable. How would I do this. This is an ATA type drive I believe. Any suggestions?

ATA to USB converters are about US $2.39 / piece on amazon. (you can also look on Ebay, Newegg, etc. Your local WorstBuy will probably have one too.)

I have not posted in a forum before, so I am not sure if this is how you respond or not. Thanks for the quick answer and that is most likely my solution but I have to get the specific kind. My hard drive has a 22 pin adapter on it, so that would make it an IDE type instead of SATA correct?

Neither. I have only 22 pins on the drive and no power connection. I believe it is an IDE type and not ATA type. I did look on local big store and did see the connector for about $15

Yes. most closely resembles #2. I have the HD sitting on my desk at work but I have the adapter here and it appears to look like #2. Thanks again for all your help.

I would like to tell you that I have the same problem as you and I have already solved it. You can see how to recover data from hard drive:
1.Replace the cables.
2.If you have a PATA (IDE/EIDE) drive, switch drive pin settings.
3.Try other IDs and/or another PCI controller and try again.
4.Plug it into an external drive adapter or external drive case。
5.Connect the drive into another computer and try again.
6. Use Data Recovery to recover lost data.
