9GB of ram installed on motherboard... sometimes it says only 6GB are installed.. whats happening? how could i fix this?

What program is reporting the memory amount?
Do you have Triple Channel properly setup as 3x3GB?
I need more info but it's possible there's an issue with one of the banks so one of the 3GB is intermittently working.
Run MEMTEST to verify the amount and that there are no errors www.memtest.org

There are no 3GB memory modules. To get 9GB, the user must be using 3x1GB plus 3x2GB for a total of 9GB of memory.
Likely the trio of slots with the 1GB modules is where the problem lies - OR - there is a timing issue between the 2 sets of memory.
What are the makes/models of the memory in use? Also, what motherboard make/model and is anything on this system being overclocked (CPU, GPU, memory)?

yes, there are 3x3GB kits but they call them "6GB" for some reason (not just this link)

Sorry, but this eBay listing has a mistake. Those are 3x2GB modules for a total of 6GB.
An older Socket 1156 motherboard could indeed have 6 memory slots. The OP could also have an odd 1x1GB plus 2x4GB combo, but that would present an even odder issue with 6GB showing.
I think we just need for the OP to provide the specs info for his/her system before we speculate much more.
